Murad Unveils Wheat Policy with Support Price Measures

Sindh Government Focuses on Wheat Supply and Price Stability

During a recent meeting held at the CM House, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining stable wheat supply in the market. This initiative aims to ensure that flour and bread prices remain consistent, providing relief to consumers and supporting local businesses.

The meeting was attended by several key officials, including Agriculture Minister Muhammad Bux Mahar, Minister Makhdoom Mehboobuz Zaman, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, Principal Secretary Agha Wasif, SBR Chairman Wasif Memon, Agriculture Secretary Zaman Narejo, Food Secretary Bachal Rahputo, and Special Secretary Finance Asghar Memon. Their collective goal was to address the current state of wheat availability and plan for future distribution.

Current Wheat Stocks and Future Projections

According to the Food Minister, Makhdoom Mehboob, Sindh currently has 1.2 million tons of wheat in stock. Additionally, the private sector holds an estimated 600,000 tons. These reserves are expected to last for the next four and a half months, until the new harvest is anticipated. This projection provides a buffer that allows the government to implement its plans without immediate pressure on the market.

Chief Minister Shah highlighted the importance of these stocks in maintaining price stability. He reiterated the need for a well-structured wheat release policy to manage the flow of wheat into the market effectively.

Developing a Comprehensive Wheat Release Policy

In response to the need for a structured approach, the Chief Minister directed the Food Minister to develop and secure approval for a comprehensive wheat release policy. \”I want to finalize the wheat release policy and set the price within this week,\” he stated. The Food Minister outlined that approximately 250,000 tons of wheat are typically released each month. For the upcoming policy, he will present his proposals to the Chief Minister for final approval.

This step is crucial in ensuring that the distribution of wheat remains controlled and predictable, preventing sudden surges or shortages that could disrupt the market.

Supporting Wheat Farmers

In addition to managing supply, the Chief Minister also spoke about the government\’s efforts to boost wheat production. He mentioned that farmers with up to 25 acres of land are receiving support in the form of fertilizers. Specifically, these growers are provided with one bag of DAP and two bags of urea fertilizer. This initiative aims to enhance crop yield and encourage sustainable farming practices.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of setting a competitive support price for wheat. \”I want to set the support price to encourage a strong wheat crop,\” he said. This measure is intended to motivate farmers to increase their production and contribute to the overall stability of the wheat market.

Conclusion

The Sindh government\’s focus on wheat supply and price stability reflects a proactive approach to addressing the needs of both producers and consumers. By ensuring adequate stock levels, developing a clear release policy, and supporting farmers through subsidies and favorable pricing, the government is working towards a more resilient agricultural sector. These efforts are essential in maintaining economic stability and food security in the region.
