Kenya Hosts COMESA Summit to Boost Trade and Regional Cooperation

Kenya is set to host the COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) Summit from October 7 to 9, bringing together African nations to discuss critical issues such as border openness, trade enhancement, and addressing shared regional challenges. This event marks a significant opportunity for member states to strengthen economic ties and explore new avenues for collaboration.

Trade Policy Secretary Regina Ombam highlighted that the summit will feature a range of activities, including business forums, ministerial meetings, and exhibitions showcasing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs from 21 member states. Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui emphasized Kenya’s economic dominance in the East African region. He noted that the country remains the preferred investment destination for investors from neighboring countries. During an interview on Citizen TV, Kinyanjui explained why investors favor Kenya:

\”Kenya remains the regional hub of choice, attracting nearly half of Nairobi’s investments from neighboring countries because of its stable shilling, resilient macroeconomic environment, and strong legal framework. Investors value Kenya’s currency stability, predictable business climate, and rule of law that upholds fairness even against the government itself.\”

This stability and favorable business environment make Kenya an attractive destination for both local and international investors. The Kenyan shilling\’s stability, combined with a robust legal system, ensures that investors can operate with confidence and predictability.

Trade PS Regina Ombam further emphasized the importance of the COMESA Summit in advancing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). She stated that the summit will highlight AfCFTA as a crucial step toward making Africa a competitive market. With leaders pushing for value addition, industrial growth, and support for SMEs, the focus is on transforming Africa from a source of raw materials into a hub of sustainable trade and industry.
