Edo State Governor Honors Team Edo with N10m Reward After National Youth Games Success
The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, recently announced a significant cash reward of N10 million for the Edo team following their impressive performance at the 9th National Youth Games. The event took place from August 29 to September 6, 2025, and saw Team Edo securing third place behind Lagos and Delta states, which claimed first and second positions respectively.
During the ceremony held at Government House in Benin City, the Governor, alongside his Deputy, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, celebrated the achievements of the athletes. He commended the team’s resilience and dedication, highlighting that their efforts had brought immense pride and honor to the state.
In announcing the cash reward, the Governor encouraged the athletes to maintain their focus and determination in future competitions. He stated:
“I congratulate our team for putting in their best and securing third position with 33 gold, 18 silver, and 28 bronze medals. This is an impressive achievement, but I challenge you to do more and put in your best to claim first position in the next edition. Edo deserves first place, and with commitment and discipline, we will get there.”
He further emphasized that the state government would continue to support the athletes, while urging them to demonstrate stronger dedication and commitment in the coming years. The Governor expressed confidence that with harder training, greater victories awaited Edo.
Support for Sports Development
The Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele, praised Governor Okpebholo for his unwavering support for sports development in the state. He highlighted that the administration’s prioritization of athletes’ welfare played a crucial role in the team’s improved performance.
Enabulele remarked:
“We thank the governor for providing the enabling environment for sports to thrive in the state. For the first time, Team Edo returned with 33 gold, 18 silver, and 28 bronze medals, an unprecedented feat in the history of our participation in the National Youth Games. The motivation came from the Governor’s commitment to the wellbeing of our athletes.”
He also presented the second runner-up trophy to the Governor, affirming that with continued government support, Edo athletes would surpass their current achievements and position the state as a dominant force in national sports.
