Tesla fans have been vocal about the fabric-covered glass roof on the newly released Model Y Standard. This design choice has sparked a lot of discussion and even some criticism from customers.

The 2026 Model Y Standard features a panoramic glass roof, similar to its pricier counterparts, but it is covered with a fabric headliner. This means that drivers and passengers cannot see through the roof. The decision has led many to question whether this is an example of over-cutting features.

Lars Moravy, Tesla’s vice president of vehicle engineering, addressed the controversy on X. He explained that there is a logical reason behind this design choice.

Why the Fabric Headliner?

Moravy highlighted that not all glass is the same. The glass used in the Premium models includes a reflective coating that helps block infrared rays and keeps the cabin cooler. In contrast, the Standard Model Y\’s roof lacks this feature.

He also mentioned that many Tesla owners, especially those in hotter regions, prefer a closed headliner. Some even install shades to manage the heat inside the car. Tesla itself sells a shade for this purpose.

Another benefit of the fabric headliner is improved road noise. It acts as an additional layer that can help reduce external sounds, making the driving experience more comfortable.

Cost-Saving Strategy

One of the main concerns raised by customers is how this design choice actually saves money. A user on X asked, \”Why go with glass instead of metal?\” Many had speculated that a glass roof would be one of the first features to be removed in the new, more affordable model.

Moravy responded that the decision was based on cost, supply chain, and manufacturing efficiency. Using a variation of the same part simplifies production and reduces costs. A metal roof would require different manufacturing processes, including stamping and affixing, which could complicate the production line.

New Affordable Models

Tesla recently announced the Model Y Standard and Model 3 Standard, which are priced around $5,000 less than their previous versions. This move comes partly in response to the expiration of the $7,500 EV tax credit. However, these models come with significant compromises.

The Model Y Standard, in particular, has faced scrutiny for its reduced features compared to higher trims. It remains to be seen whether these more affordable variants will help boost Tesla’s vehicle sales, which have been stagnant.
