Anambra State Celebrates 8,300 Graduates of Youth Empowerment Programme
Anambra State has witnessed a significant milestone in youth development with the graduation of 8,300 young people from the second batch of the state government’s ‘1Youth2Skills plus’ programme. This initiative is part of a broader effort to empower the youth and foster economic growth through skill acquisition and business development.
The ‘1Youth2Skills’ programme serves as a capacity-building workshop that equips participants with essential skills in various sectors, including agriculture, information and communication technology (ICT), fashion, crafts, services, cake making, and more. The programme aims to transform the lives of young people by providing them with the tools needed to become self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to the economy.
At the graduation ceremony held at the International Convention Centre in Awka, the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, emphasized the importance of the programme. He highlighted that N3.5 billion was allocated as an empowerment grant to support the business aspirations of the graduates. The governor also recalled that the programme, launched in October 2022, aligns with his manifesto promise of creating 1,000 youth millionaires annually. He described the initiative as “stomach infrastructure on a sustainable basis,” underscoring its long-term impact on the community.
Over 183,000 applications were received for the programme, showcasing its popularity and the high level of interest among the youth. The governor noted that the initiative is revolutionizing youth empowerment in Nigeria, focusing on productive, innovative, and export-driven ventures. He further mentioned that substantial funds have been set aside for the Anambra Small Business Agency to provide loans to interested beneficiaries.
Governor Soludo expressed his pride in the achievements of the graduates, stating:
“Today, I celebrate the graduation of 8,300 young men and women from the second batch of our ‘1Youth2Skills plus’ programme. This initiative is revolutionising youth empowerment in Nigeria, focusing on productive, innovative, and export-driven ventures. We have disbursed N3.5 billion in grants to support their business dreams. Our goal is to make Anambra the skill hub of Sub-Saharan Africa. To our graduands, I say: start small, start now, think big! You have been equipped with the skills, funding, and mentorship. Now it’s your turn to shine! I am excited to see the impact you will make in our state and beyond. Congratulations. May Anambra continue to win!”
The Commissioner for Youth Development, Patrick Aghamba, expressed delight at the programme\’s growth and its transformative effect on the lives of thousands of youths. He emphasized the positive changes brought about by the initiative and its potential to create a new generation of skilled entrepreneurs.
Prof. Chinedu Onyeizugbe, Chairman of the OneYouthTwoSkills Entrepreneurship Scheme, highlighted the programme’s success, noting a 48 per cent increase in participation. He proposed the initiative as a model for scholars and practitioners, emphasizing that each graduation ceremony brings the vision of a well-equipped Anambra youth closer to reality.
Several beneficiaries shared their experiences, testifying that the programme has enabled them to become employers of labor. This outcome reflects the programme’s focus on fostering entrepreneurship and job creation.
Recall that the first cohort in 2023 empowered 5,000 youths with N2 billion in start-up support, with over 1,000 already running thriving ventures.
